Welcome to "Thistle Hill"

You are entering the Reception Hall viewing the Grand Staircase

of the mansion below

This is a landmark in my hometown and was built by A. B. Wharton, a wealthy cattle baron as a wedding gift to his daughter Electra.

He paid $45,000 for the construction of this 11,000 square foot mansion completed in 1904. In 1911 it was sold to the Scott family who converted it from a Colonial to a Georgian Revival style. After several changes in ownership, it had fallen into disrepair and was destined for the wrecking ball until a group of concerned citizens raised enough money to purchase it for $240,000 in 1976. It was gifted to Historic Fort Worth in 2005 and continues to be restored.

The furnishings are not original to the house and have been donated or acquired through purchases. There are many more rooms which weren't shown. This property is used for weddings, corporate events and social functions. The preceding photos were taken from the website:

The following photos were taken by us in Historic Ryanplace, a neighborhood started in 1911 by developer John C. Ryan and is still sought after as a place of residence.
I like to refer to this area as "old silk stocking row"

This is my FAVORITE

My 3rd FAVORITE

The brick looks funny in this photo
There are many more old mansions in the area, but this is a good sampling of what they look like

And now an excellent example of Queen Anne-style is the Ball-Eddleman-McFarland home circa 1899. It has only had the 3 owners and now is used primarily for corporate events or weddings

I do love seeing the old homes, but I wouldn't want to clean them or pay their utility bills....Yikes!

Good morning Bo, your mansions are wonderful. My favorite thing to do is visit and tour old houses. I am fascinated by them. I could have been a happy woman living in a place with all the wonderful detail shown in these beautiful old homes. I am definitely a romantic at heart.

I am posting your tag today but I am still working on it. for some reason I have been fighting with my computer all morning. Since 6:00am, sigh. It is not connecting to typypad for some reason. check my post later.

Love...Jeanne

Good morning Bo :)

That first home is wonderful! I'm so happy they saved it. I can't imagine why anyone would tear down something that beautiful, which I'm sure it was, even in disrepair.

I love the little house the best of the other house tour, but they are all beautiful :)

Well, I guess I can't sing Popeye's song, but I will eat a spinach salad with that warm bacon heart healthy dressing!

You may want to go to that web page I told about on my blog. They make it really easy and the instructions are easty to follow.

Hi Bo - I really enjoyed your mansion tour. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to live in one of these old homes? Of course - you're right about the upkeep. When I see homes such as these I wonderful about the people that lived in them. During the holiday season, one of the towns close to us has tours of the historical homes. I plan to attend and take some photos to share.
Have a great day!

Bo, I'm back to thank you for your very sweet comment on my post. Angel here on earth? smile. Ask my dh if I don't show my horns sometimes? lol Not often I admit. I can't stay mad for more than a minute. I figure life is way to short to waste it on negatives. I do really believe that. Hugs...Jeanne

What gorgeous mansions! I love old houses. My first house was built in 1923. I really did love it and miss it sometimes. It had a beautiful stained glass window in the dining room. I still have pictures so I might post them someday. Great post! Kristen

Oh my, did I ever enjoy that wonderful tour. I love history, old homes and antiques. My girls always hate when we go on vacation because I always want to visit every historic site and museum I can while there. I guess they don't share my passion. . . YET!!

Thanks for joining my blog party. The link you typed into Mr Linky didn't work, so I'm going to delete it and try it again for you.

This mansion looks beautiful. I was interested in seeing that all of the home's lights were electric and the heat was hot water in addition to the fireplaces (at least from what I could tell). Am I right? If you happen to know when the hot water heat was added, I'd be interested in knowing. It was neat to see such an old house with old furnishings and slightly newer things like that. What a treasure to have nearby!

Well you're certainly right about that, but they sure would be fun to play hide & seek in! Thanks for the tour. I loved the 1st one. The Ball, Eddelman, MacFarland (I hope I got that right) reminds me of our Governor's mansion in NC. Love your new blog background. So sorry to hear you had to re-do it. I did notice that you had a "practice blog". I thought you may be out of town or something since I hadn't seen much of you this week. Have a great weekend if I don't talk to ya'. Got to go to bed earlier tonight to hit those yard sales b/4 soccer! :O)

First of all, I love your blog title (and sub-title. :-)

I can not imagine that Thistle Hill was destined for a date with the wrecking ball! What a BEAUTY! It makes me nuts to think how many homes in our history have met a similar fate. And I just love your photo of the Ball-Eddleman-McFarland home. It looks like my kind of place!

Thank you for this lovely tour of historic homes. :-)
